A Brief History of Phaselis
Founded in 700 BC by Greek colonists from Rhodes, Phaselis grew to become one of the most important harbor cities on the Lycian coast. Strategically positioned between three natural harbors, the city thrived as a vital trading post connecting the Mediterranean world.
The city witnessed the passage of Alexander the Great in 333 BC, who spent the winter here before his legendary conquests. Under Roman rule, Phaselis flourished further, adorned with impressive public buildings, baths, theaters, and agoras that stand testament to its prosperity.
